Nestled in the heart of Park Avenue, The Doggie Door has been a staple of the Winter Park community for over a decade. Winter Park, and especially Park Avenue- where water bowls outside of the local storefronts are the norm instead of the exception- has a reputation for being very friendly and welcoming to our four legged friends. Because of this, Park Avenue was a natural fit for The Doggie Door! “A gift shop for the dog, cat, and horse lover”, The Doggie Door features designer pet accessories and unique pet-related gifts. Owners Jeff Brow and Brian Wettstein first ventured into small business ownership in the fall of 1999 with a 650 sq. ft. storefront- The “original” Doggie Door.
A few years later, they decided to expand their business ventures. Inspired by culinary finds on their travels, especially an extraordinary Basil Olive Oil tasted on Newbury Street in Boston, they opened “Olive This, Relish That”. These two businesses operated separately for several years until 2006 when they were united into one large storefront. This new store, Bullfish, represented a merging of ideas; even the name was a merger of Jeff and Brian’s two astrological signs- Taurus (Bull) and Pisces (fish). After a few years, relocations (and misadventures!) Jeff and Brian yet again reinvented their ideas. With fresh inspiration they reopened The Doggie Door on North Park Avenue and in 2012 they expanded to include the “human” side of the store; Unleashed- Fetching Wine & Gourmet Gifts.
Since it’s inception, The Doggie Door has hosted some of Park Avenue’s most beloved events. These include the Pet Costume Contest held yearly on the last Sunday of October, The Dog Days of Summer Wine & Beer Tasting, and the Doggie Art Festival, which overtakes half of Park Avenue every April and attracts thousands of art and pet lovers alike.
Inspired by their community and love for animals, Jeff & Brian -with the help of some wonderful friends and greyhound lovers- created a non-profit called the Sebastian Haul Fund. Formed in 2007 and named after their late, beloved, greyhound Sebastian, this organization became the beneficiary of their signature events. The Sebastian Haul Fund’s mission is “helping Central Florida Greyhounds reach their new families” and has amazingly helped more than 1000 greyhounds reach their new homes with the help of 4 local greyhound organizations and more than 30 greyhound groups up the Eastern Seaboard, New York and into Canada.
